Entering the Water Cold: The Warm-Up Oversight
One of the most pervasive errors in a classic swimming session is the abrupt transition from land to water. Many swimmers, eager to feel the cool embrace of the pool, slide in and immediately push off the wall at full speed. This is a physiological miscalculation. Muscles that have not been gradually prepared are less pliable and more susceptible to micro-tears. Furthermore, the cardiovascular system experiences a sudden shock, leading to premature breathlessness and a spike in heart rate that is neither efficient nor sustainable. A proper warm-up should involve dynamic stretches on the deck and several hundred meters of easy, varied strokes in the water, allowing the body to acclimate to the aquatic environment and priming the nervous system for the work ahead.
The Goggle and Cap Gauntlet
A surprising number of sessions are derailed before they truly begin, courtesy of ill-fitted equipment. Goggles that are either too tight or too loose become a source of constant distraction. Over-tightened straps create a vacuum that feels like a vice around the eye sockets, leading to headaches and the distinctive “goggle eyes” that linger long after the swim. Conversely, loose goggles invite water intrusion, forcing the swimmer to stop every length to clear them. Equally problematic is the swim cap that is donned without care. Hair caught under the silicone or latex creates drag and discomfort, while a cap that is not properly seated can slide off during a turn. The classic solution is to wet the hair before putting on the cap and to adjust goggle straps while wearing the cap to ensure a snug, leak-proof seal.
Breath Holding: The Silent Thief of Efficiency
Perhaps the most counterintuitive mistake is the tendency to hold the breath. Novice and intermediate swimmers alike often take a deep breath and then hold it for several strokes, believing this conserves oxygen. In reality, this practice builds up carbon dioxide in the lungs, triggering a panicked need to exhale forcefully and gasp for air. This disrupts the rhythm of the stroke and elevates the heart rate unnecessarily. The correct technique involves a continuous, gentle exhalation through the nose or mouth as the face is in the water, followed by a swift, controlled inhalation during the breathing window. This rhythmic cycle keeps the lungs from becoming over-pressurized and ensures a steady supply of oxygen, making the session feel significantly less strenuous.
Overkicking and the Frantic Leg Drive
Watch any pool deck, and the most visible sign of wasted energy is the frantic, bicycle-like kick of a swimmer trying to generate forward motion solely from the legs. The legs are large muscle groups that consume a disproportionate amount of oxygen. A thrashing kick does not propel the swimmer forward efficiently; instead, it creates drag and elevates the heart rate to unsustainable levels. In a classic endurance session, the kick should be a stabilizing and propulsive aid, not the primary engine. A two-beat or light six-beat kick, originating from the hips with relaxed ankles, is far more effective. This allows the larger, more powerful muscles of the back, shoulders, and chest to do the heavy lifting in the pull phase, reserving leg energy for the crucial body roll and balance.
The Rushed Catch and Pull
In the pursuit of speed, many swimmers develop a short, frantic arm stroke. They enter the hand into the water and immediately begin to pull backward with a straight arm, creating a splashing, inefficient motion that wastes power. The classic mistake is the “slip”—where the hand and forearm fail to anchor in the water, resulting in a pull that moves more water than it propels. The correction lies in the “catch.” This is the phase where the hand and forearm angle to grip the water, often described as feeling for a solid object. A high elbow position, where the elbow remains above the hand during the early pull, allows the swimmer to use the entire forearm as a paddle. A slow, deliberate catch followed by an accelerating pull through to the hip delivers far more thrust with less energy expenditure.
Ignoring the Turn and the Wall
The wall is a gift in a pool session, yet it is often treated as an afterthought. A common flaw is gliding too far into the wall, losing all momentum, or approaching too fast and executing a rushed, breathless flip-turn. Both scenarios result in a significant drop in pace. The ideal turn is a seamless transition: a timed approach, a compact somersault, a powerful push-off on the back, and a streamlined underwater dolphin kick to break through the surface tension. Neglecting the underwater phase is another critical error. Many swimmers surface immediately after a turn, losing the speed generated from the push-off. A few well-executed underwater kicks, while respecting individual lung capacity, can carry a swimmer past the initial drag of breaking the surface, maintaining the session’s rhythm and saving vital energy.
Inconsistent Pacing and the Training Void
A classic session often falls apart due to a lack of a structured plan. Swimmers jump in and swim at a single, moderate pace for the entire duration, never varying the intensity.
